Cataloging Discoveries

Interesting books, historical materials, and unusual formats I encounter in my cataloging work. This collection will grow as I add new discoveries.

A printed and hand-painted leaf from a Book of Hours

This detached leaf combines a hand-colored metalcut with gold on one side and printed Latin prayers and illustrated borders on the other. The figures are identified as Justice, Peace, the Church, and Mercy. A bookseller’s description dates it to the early sixteenth century and tentatively attributes its publication to Germain and Gilles Hardouyn in Paris; the edition and attribution remain unconfirmed.

Hand-colored illustration on the leaf, with richly dressed figures, gold detail, a blue background, and identifying labels below.
